Church Elders, Job Descriptions, and Next Generation Leader

Last night the elders from CrossWay Church met for a couple hours.  After talking a little about what’s going on with everyone, we prayed and jumped into the business portion of the meeting.

Two of our current projects are composing a job description for the pastor and another one for the elders.  (Of course, there is some overlap between the two.)  Everyone had some good, thoughtful input.  Between now and the next meeting I’ll take that feedback and write a rough draft for each document.  We’ll review them next time, make any necessary changes, and officially adopt and implement them.  The new job descriptions will serve as the basis for what we do as the pastor and elders, and they’ll be the criteria on which we base an evaluation every six months.

Then we moved into a discussion of Next Generation Leader: 5 Essentials for Those Who Will Shape the Future by Andy Stanley.  We’d read the first section (three chapters) for this gathering, and had a great talk about it.  The gist of this first section is that a leader must discover his/her core competencies and devote most of their time to developing and using their gifts.  We add the most value to the church when we focus on exercising our strengths, not trying to improve our weaknesses.  We batted around some ideas about how we can actually do this as the eldership team.  I look forward to putting these principles into practice and working through the rest of the book with these men!

Um… I Don’t Think So

The other day one of Carolyn’s little kindergarten girls put her hand on Carolyn’s stomach and said, “I feel the baby’s head!”

Right now the entire baby is about the size of a bean, so, um… I’m not so sure about that.

Awesome Week at Catalyst

Tuesday morning, and I’m still recovering from an amazing week at the Catalyst Conference near Atlanta, Georgia.  I was part of a 20-person team from four churches that traveled down there together.  We left for the 14-hour drive last Tuesday morning and got back around 6:45 on Saturday morning.

Catalyst 2008 was easily the best conference I’ve ever been to.  And the timing couldn’t have been better–it was just what I needed.  The speakers were challenging and encouraging, and it was pretty cool to worship God together with 12,400 other church leaders.  I’ll post some of my conference notes in the days ahead.

Obama & Abortion

This afternoon I came across a frightening article about the man who just might be our next president.  Read it here.

Extremists in any direction tend to be scary, but someone who’s enthusiastic about abortion just wigs me out.

Real Life: Living in Holiness

At CrossWay yesterday we talked about “Living in Holiness” in week 6 of the Real Life series.  Our Scripture passages were 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8; 5:23-24.

When we hear the word “holiness,” it might bring to mind some stuffy guys with their neckties too tight, who look down on everyone else for not being as good as them.  Actually, that has nothing to do with holiness.  True holiness can be summed up as living to please God.  When we live to please God, we do things that make Him happy and don’t do things that make Him unhappy.  It’s really as simple as that.

Watch for the podcast to be up soon!

CrossWay Core Commitment #5

The fifth core commitment–but certainly not less in importance–that members of CrossWay Church make is that we will love God and love people by inviting others to participate in the first four commitments.  In real life, this is played out in numerous ways:

  • I tell others about Jesus Christ.
  • I invite people to church.
  • I invite people to my community group.
  • I invite others to join me in carrying out my ministry.
  • I tell others what God-given gifts, abilities, and passions I see in them.
  • I share with others what God is doing in my life.
  • I encourage others to pursue God tenaciously.
  • I encourage others to enjoy God and meet with Him daily.

CrossWay Core Commitment #4

The fourth core commitment that defines the members of CrossWay Church is that we commit to loving people by building friendships with them.  This sounds simple, and it actually is.  There are several ways we each work to fulfill this commitment:

  • I will be intentional about getting to know people outside the church.
  • I will be intentional about getting to know people within the church.
  • I will share my life with other people and will invest in them.
  • I will participate in a community group.
  • My family and I will spend time with other families.
  • I will invite people to participate in my community group.
  • I will pray for deepening friendships with other people.

CrossWay Core Commitment #3

Our third core commitment that we make as members of CrossWay Church is that we will love people by serving them.

When I make this commitment, I live it out in several ways:

  • I discover the gifts and abilities that God has given me.
  • I discover the specific passions that God has given me.
  • I learn how to use my gifts, abilities, and passions to help other people.
  • I help people out of love for them and to glorify God.
  • I give sacrificially of my time, money, energy, and other resources to help people.
  • I participate in church-wide activities to serve people, such as fulfilling a service role on Sunday mornings and participating in outreach events.
  • I pray for God to meet the specific needs of particular people.
  • I watch for spontaneous opportunities to help people.

CrossWay Core Commitment #2

The second core commitment we make as members of CrossWay Church is that we will love God by developing intimacy with Him through daily spiritual habits.

Making this commitment means that on a regular basis I will:

  • Read the Bible to know God better.
  • Read the Bible to hear what God has to say to me.
  • Talk with God and give Him thanks and praise.
  • Talk with God and share with Him the things that are on my heart and mind.
  • Ask God to help me with the various things I’m facing.
  • Ask God to meet the needs of other people.
  • Spend time simply being consciously aware of God’s presence.
  • Write down things that God is saying to me.
  • Write down things that God is doing in my life.
  • Celebrate my salvation in Christ and my relationship with God.

This is an open-ended list, but should regularly include at least all these things.

It’s important to point out here that we make this commitment not because it’s a rule or to try to score points with God, but because we love God and want to grow in intimacy with Him.

Janes Island Kindergarten Field Trip

On Friday I joined Carolyn’s kindergarten class for a field trip to Janes Island, a park in Crisfield, Maryland.  It was the first time I met her class this year.  These kids are so funny!  On the field trip they went crabbing, played games, made some crafts, and went on a scavenger hunt.

Some highlights:

  • One little girl had a band-aid on her finger and after about an hour she came up to me complaining that her finger hurt.  When I looked, I saw that she had wrapped her band-aid as tight as a tourniquet.  Her finger looked like a balloon that was squeezed in the middle and her fingertip was dark purple.  I quickly ripped off the band-aid and her finger returned to normal.  Once the panic had passed, it was pretty funny!
  • Every year when I visit her class, Carolyn’s students try to figure out just what our relationship is.  It’s almost always the girls.  Some think Carolyn is my mom or sister or daughter, others think she’s my girlfriend.  One little girl, after I said Carolyn’s my wife, said quizzically: “She’s your life?”  When I first told the girls that Carolyn and I are married, one of them said, “Eeewww!”  Another one said, “You’re nasty!”
  • The day before the field trip, Carolyn had explained to her class that she was having a baby.  The next day, one little girl asked me, “Can Mrs. Hyde have a baby soon?”  Another one asked her if she was having the baby tomorrow.  Carolyn’s expecting this will probably go on all year long.
  • These kids just don’t get the idea of a scavenger hunt.  We had a list of objects to find, and every time I read the next item on the list, the kids would pick up whatever they saw next.  For example, I said, “We need to find something beautiful.”  One girl picked up a dead, jagged, broken branch, held it up to me, smiled proudly, and boasted, “This is beautiful!”
  • One of the park employees played a game with the kids to teach them about habitats and survival.  At one point she asked them, “If you were a deer, what would you need to survive?”  One little guy piped up: “A gun and a bow and arrow!”
  • It was time for recess when we got back to the school.  Several kids were drawing in the dirt with sticks, so I tried to teach them how to play tic tac toe.  We played a couple games, then I walked away to a different part of the playground.  Several minutes later one of the kids came over and asked me to walk back to where they were drawing in the dirt.  This little girl had scratched a cross in the dirt–her two lines made up her version of a tic tac toe board.  Around the cross were some X’s and O’s.  Two little girls were squatting there.  They looked at their game, then up at me, then back at their game, then back at me.  Finally one of the girls asked me: “Who won?”
