Jonah & CrossWay Membership Class

At CrossWay yesterday we started a new series and also began our first membership class.

The series is a two-parter about the Book of Jonah.  Yesterday we read the first two chapters and a couple verses from chapter 3.  The subject was repentance, which essentially is making a U-turn.  At some point we’re all traveling down our own road, and repentance is when we make a U-turn to get onto God’s road for us.  We explored how Jonah ran away from God–he literally tried to run away from God by buying a ticket to the end of the known world.  As you might expect, it didn’t go quite the way he anticipated… not even close!  Once Jonah learned about running away from God and turning around to come back to Him, he learned firsthand about repentance and the universal need for God’s grace.

We’ll pick the series up next week and finish out the Book of Jonah.

After the worship service we shared a meal together.  We had been doing this the first Sunday of every month, but due to various factors we missed January and February.  I’ve missed it.  It was great to sit around eating and talking with everyone again!

After lunch we held our first ever CrossWay membership class!  According to the official church Constitution & By-Laws which we adopted last fall, none of us are actually members of the church.  That can be kind of problematic.  One of the requirements of membership is completion of the membership class, and since this is the first time it’s been offered, this graduating class will be the first official members of CrossWay!

The class is two parts.  Yesterday we covered our mission, vision, values, and core beliefs.  Lots of Bible study!  Next week we’ll talk more specifically about membership and our particular congregation, such as our history and affiliations.  Then anyone who would like to join will have the opportunity to sign the membership covenant.

There were 15 people at the class yesterday, which is a pretty good start.  The class will probably be offered quarterly, depending on the need and interest.

Celebrate & Serve: A Call to Commitment

We wrapped up the series Celebrate & Serve on Sunday at CrossWay.  We reviewed our mission, vision, values, goals and strategy.  Then we brought it to a personal level and explained how each individual can personally be involved in helping the church achieve our goals for this year and work toward fulfilling the vision.

A quick summary of the Personal Next Steps:

(1) Community: Our goal is to have 75% of our regular attenders become participants in a community group.  Personal Next Step: Try out a community group!  And if you’re already in one, then get in the habit of inviting others to come check it out.

(2) Reverence: Our goal is to reach an average of 75 people in worship on Sunday mornings.  Personal Next Step: Set a personal goal for attending and participating in worship.  Rather than deciding each Saturday night whether or not you’ll go to church the next day, just make it a habit to go.

(3) Outreach: Our goal for this year is to invite 2,000 people to hear the gospel at CrossWay (see previous posts for more details).  This is not the only thing we’re doing for outreach–and in fact it could be argued that this is more inreach than outreach, as it’s definitely more attractional* than missional**–but it’s a start.  As a church we’ve not yet gotten in the habit of inviting people to worship with us, so developing that mindset is our first step.  Personal Next Step: Make a list of 5 people you can invite to church.  And then invite them!

(4) Service: Our goal for this year is to have 50% of our regular attenders using their God-given gifts to meet the needs of others.  Personal Next Step: Get a job.  In the marketplace, unemployment is usually involuntary.  In the church, it’s all voluntary.  To illustrate how easy it is to get involved and serve, we brought into the sanctuary a display of artwork made by three-year-olds at the Training Station Preschool.  Each child shared a creative way that they help out at home.  If three-year-olds can do it, certainly adults can!

(5) Spiritual Growth: Our goal for 2010 is to have 50% of our regular attenders reading the Bible and praying at least 5 days a week.  Personal Next Step: Read the Bible and pray on your own each day.  We gave everyone the tools they need to get started: We give away free Bibles, there’s a suggested daily reading guide in the worship bulletins, and we’ve already encouraged everyone to make a list of 5 people they can invite to church, so they’ve already got a prayer list.  The important thing here is not to aim for some kind of long, deep devotional time, but simply to develop a daily habit.

That’s five Next Steps for one sermon!  So we asked everyone to pick one of them to begin right away, and set the other four as goals for the year.

We read 1 Peter 2:4-6, which describes individual Christians as “living stones” that God uses to build His church.  So at the end of the worship service, we invited people to make a commitment to help build the church by committing to these goals.  We had five baskets up front, each one labeled with one of our core values.  Everyone who wanted to make a commitment to the vision of CrossWay came up and took a stone from each basket and laid it at the foot of a cross at the front of the sanctuary, while the band played “For Such A Time As This.”  It was pretty moving!

On Monday when I was in the sanctuary and saw all the stones at the foot of the cross, I was surprised by an emotional wave that came over me.  It hit me how each one of those rocks represented a heartfelt commitment that someone made to Christ and to CrossWay, and that is simply awesome.

* attractional: Strategic efforts to draw people from the community to our church.  The focus is on getting them to come to us.

** missional: Strategic efforts to go out into the community and reach people where they already are.  The focus is on us going to to them.

Both attractional and missional outreach ministries are important to a church on mission to reach people with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Preschool Theology

It’s amazing how kids get it.  We have so much to learn from them.

This morning when Ms. Grace was teaching the Bible story at the Training Station, she asked them what a miracle is.  One little girl raised her hand and said, “Something only God can do.”  That floored me.  Adults write huge volumes and preach long sermons trying to explain what a miracle is, and usually leave people confused.  And here’s this four-year-old girl nailing it right on the head in only five words!

When Ms. Grace was telling the story and mentioned Jesus, one little guy interjected, “God and Jesus are the same people!”  I’m totally putting him in our preaching rotation.

Celebrate & Serve: Goals & Strategy

This past Sunday was the third part of the Celebrate & Serve series at CrossWay.  We talked about our goals and our strategies for achieving them.

Yesterday I wrote about our five core values: Community, Reverence, Outreach, Service, and Spiritual Growth.  For each one of these values, we have a goal for 2010–and only one, so that we can stay focused.  These goals are not huge, but they will require that God stretch us.  Since it’s useless to have goals without a plan to accomplish them, we’ve developed a strategy for reaching each goal.  Here they are:

Community: Our goal is to have 75% of our regular Sunday attenders become participants in a community group.  We will do this by encouraging people throughout the year to plug into a group, encouraging group members to constantly invite others, starting new groups, and training new leaders.  75% is about three times the national average.

Reverence: Our goal is to average 75 people in attendance on Sunday mornings.  Right now we average about 50.  Again, this is not a huge goal, but it’s a very significant increase.  Does this mean we’re all about numbers?  Of course not.  But remember, our vision is to be a place where anyone can understand and respond to the Bible, and the more people we have with us on Sunday mornings, the more people are presented with an opportunity to understand and respond to the Bible.  We will work toward this goal by starting a second service (it launches the week after Easter), encouraging and equipping people to invite others, reaching out to our community, and consistently improving the quality of our worship services.  If we reach 75, that would be a 50% increase.

Outreach: This goal is our easiest one for this year.  We aim to personally invite 2,000 people to attend the worship service at CrossWay Church (starting next year, our Outreach goals will be measured differently… more about this later on).  We will do this by creating and distributing 2,000 invite cards for five key series throughout the year, and giving them to our members and attenders to use as a tool to personally invite others.  We will also do outreach events such as Summer Bible Camp, an Easter Egg Hunt, Christmas KidsFest, and others.  (Got ideas?  Please leave a comment or email me!)

Service: Our goal is to have 50% of our regular attenders use their God-given gifts to serve others.  We will do this through classes, such as our upcoming membership class, as well as providing ample opportunities for everyone to discover and use their gifts.  Everyone will be encouraged to serve in some capacity on Sunday mornings, in community groups, and at outreach events.  We will also work with people to discover if there is a new, unique ministry that God is calling them to.  50% may not seem that high for something that seems so simple, but it’s more than double the national average.

Spiritual Growth: Our goal is to have 50% of our people reading their Bible and praying at least five days a week.  We will do this by teaching about spiritual habits and giving people the tools they need to put them into practice.  For example, we offer a daily reading guide in our worship bulletin each week, and we make free Bibles available.  If half the people devote this much time to soaking in God’s Word and praying, our church and community will never be the same.

Each month I’m going to compile a progress report to assess where we are with these goals, and we will dedicate several sermons throughout the year to evaluating where we are and recasting the vision.

This Sunday we’re wrapping up the Celebrate & Serve series, but we’ll just be getting started with living it out!

Celebrate & Serve: Core Values

Since I haven’t blogged about the Celebrate & Serve series, I’m playing catchup here.

The second week of the series at CrossWay we talked about our church’s core values.  Since we’re God’s people, what is most important to God is what should be most important to us.  So we looked to the Bible and found some good summary statements in Matthew 22:37-40 & Matthew 28:18-20.  Based on those passages (as well as a ton of others), we’ve come up with five core values that are the basis of everything we do as a church:

Community: We love people by building friendships with them.  This is done primarily in our community groups, which are groups of about 4-12 people that meet in homes during the week for prayer, Bible study, and discussion.  The aim of these groups is to deepen relationships through sharing life together.

Reverence: We love God by worshiping Him with His family.  We take our weekend worship services pretty seriously.  We encourage everyone to make it a very high priority to be there on Sundays so we can worship God together.

Outreach: We love people by inviting them to encounter Jesus personally.  We have various outreach events in which we focus on this, but we also encourage people to make it a part of their personal, daily lifestyle.

Service: We love people by helping them.  We use our God-given gifts to serve them.  This happens in various ways on Sundays mornings, in community groups, at outreach events, and in countless ways throughout the week as we look for opportunities to help others.

Spiritual Growth: We love God  by developing intimacy with Him through healthy spiritual habits.  These daily habits include Bible reading and study, prayer, meditation (not that kind of meditation–this simply means quiet reflection on God’s Word), and other spiritual practices.  These “grace practices,” as I’ve heard them called, help to form the character of Christ in us and prepare us for community, reverence, outreach, and service.

Celebrate & Serve: Mission and Vision

Yesterday at CrossWay Church we continued with our series called Celebrate & Serve.  This was supposed to be our vision series that would launch the first four weeks of the year, but with the snow and vertigo, it’ll take us to the end of February.  Oh well.

The first week of the series we read Nehemiah 8:1-12 and talked about our mission and vision.

Our mission at CrossWay is to make lifelong followers of Jesus Christ throughout our community and around the world.

Our vision (which is a picture of what it would look like as we accomplish the mission) is to be a place where anyone can understand and respond to the Bible.

That passage in Nehemiah talks about an occasion when thousands of people heard and understood Scripture and responded by celebrating and serving.  So we’ve adopted Celebrate & Serve as our theme for the year.  We’re going to do those two things as much as we can: celebrate by having fun together, and serve by using our God-given gifts to help others.

SonRise West OC

A little update on the new satellite church campus coming soon to West Ocean City:

It’s going to be called SonRise Church West OC.  Pastor Kyle McDaniel, the executive pastor at SonRise, will be leading the ministry there and preaching weekly.

They’re going to be located near Waterman’s, across the street from WaWa.  I’ll keep posting updates, including a link to their website, when I find out more.

A New Thang

Pretty soon there’s going to be a new church here in West Ocean City, really close to CrossWay.  They’re actually a satellite campus for a church a few miles from here.

I’m excited about it.  At CrossWay we’ve been working at getting beyond ourselves to reaching the community, but we still have a long way to go.  So I’m really excited that God is putting another congregation here in our neighborhood to help reach our community with the gospel of Jesus Christ!  Please keep them in your prayers as they get ready to launch.  (I’d give their name here, but I don’t know yet what it will be called.  I’ll let you know when I find out.)

Christmas KidsFest 2009

On Saturday we had our third annual Christmas KidsFest here at CrossWay Church.  It was great!  We had 41 children.  They had gingerbread cookies that they painted with colored frosting, made Christmas ornaments, sang songs, ate lunch, opened a present with their name from under the Christmas tree and then played with their presents, and learned the story of Jesus’ birth.

This year’s crowd was nearly double what we’ve had in the past, but everything went well!  I love the way the Bible story was done.  The kids opened a gift box one at a time, and each box had something (or someone) in the Christmas story, and Carolyn told them that part of the story.  (One little guy opened the box with the angel.  “What is it?” Carolyn asked.  He replied, “A butterfly!”)  At the end of the story Carolyn asked them if they knew what God wants for Christmas.  There was one more gift box, and Carolyn passed it around for each child to look in so they could see what God wants for Christmas.  The bottom of the box was fitted with a mirror so that each child would see his or her own face.  What a neat way to teach the children that what God wants for Christmas is for them to know and love Him!  (Of course, there were a few of the younger kids who needed it to be explained several times that a mirror was not what God wants for Christmas.)

It was great to see so many from CrossWay give up a chunk of their Saturday to serve these families from our community and show them the love of Christ!

Sledgehammers, Cute Babies, Cosby, and the Devil

What’s happening:

  • We’re halfway through the Revealed series at CrossWay.  Last Sunday I preached about the devil–the dragon of Revelation 12.  It just worked out that it was the day after Halloween.
  • Carolyn and I have watched every episode of The Cosby Show.  We just finished the eighth and final season.  Now that’s good television!  I don’t know how long it took, probably about three years.  Being able to watch an entire show like that is one of the advantages of Netflix.
  • Several churches in our community came together last Saturday for our annual Harvest Fair.  This year we had about 1,300 people.  The size of the crowd grows every year.  Laura Marie was dressed as a flower for the first half of the night, then switched to her pink poodle costume.  She was absolutely adorable!  This year was especially cool for me because I got to smash a pumpkin with a giant sledgehammer.  If only I’d known several months in advance, I could’ve grown my hair long in the back and on the sides to complete the Gallagher effect.

  • It’s picture week at the Training Station, and they were kind enough to take our family portrait.  Our first one!
