CrossWay On Purpose – Session 5

On Wednesday night, with a group of 12, we started out by looking at Revelation 17:17, which says: “For God has put it into their hearts to accomplish His purpose by agreeing to give the beast their power to rule, until God’s words are fulfilled.”  Okay, I know that sounds really weird out of context.  Actually, it sounds pretty weird in context.  The point is that God puts plans in the minds of even the bad guys in order to accomplish His purposes.  If He does that even with the bad guys, how much more will He do so with His own church?  God will have His way with CrossWay.  He will accomplish His purposes through us.  We only need to search out His plan and ask Him to press it on our hearts and minds.  If we’ll do this and be faithful to act on what He tells us, success is guaranteed.

Just a reminder of what success for the Christian church looks like: Loving God, loving people.  If we do that, we’ve done everything right.

Then we talked briefly about what we’ve seen in the Scriptures up to this point in the study.  Christi shared with us that one thing that’s stood out to her is the repeated command to go and tell.   That will indeed largely define us in the months and years ahead!

We had some time of prayer and launched into the Scriptures.  We read and discussed Ephesians 1:22-23; 2:19-22; 3:6; 3:14-21; 4:11-16; 5:23-24; Colossians 1:24-29 (as you can see, it was a very Ephesian evening!).

Here’s what we discovered about what God wants CrossWay Church to be and to do:

  • Jesus is the Head of the Church
  • we are the Body
  • we represent the fullness of Jesus (every aspect)
  • He uses each part of the Body
  • we are God’s household
  • we are a building, God’s temple
  • we are fellow citizens
  • we are continually being built together
  • we are to be united
  • we are to be holy
  • we are built on the foundation of the apostles & prophets
  • the Spirit of God lives in us
  • Christ is the Chief Cornerstone
  • Christ holds us together
  • we are heirs
  • we share together in God’s promise in Jesus Christ
  • we’re part of the same body
  • to reverence the Father (prayer)-to kneel before Him
  • we are to bring the church to God in prayer
  • we bear the Father’s name
  • we get our power from His Spirit
  • Christ dwells in our hearts
  • we are to be rooted & grounded in love, so we’ll know & understand the love of Christ
  • to love in the Spirit
  • to be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God
  • to give glory to God
  • to know Christ practically through experience, in a personal way
  • to remember that Christ is able
  • we are given our gifts by Jesus
  • we are gifted individually for a specific purpose
  • to do works of service
  • to build up the Body of Christ
  • to have unity in the faith
  • to become mature
  • it all has to be done in love
  • to speak the truth in love
  • Christ, the Head, supplies everything we need
  • to be grounded in truth-don’t be tossed around by false teaching
  • to know God’s Word
  • each part must do its work
  • grow up
  • to submit to Christ
  • Christ is the Head, we are the body
  • to fully carry out the Word of God
  • to rejoice in suffering
  • we are servants
  • we are commissioned by God
  • we are entrusted with God’s mission
  • to preach the Word of God in its fullness
  • Christ is in us
  • to preach Christ
  • to admonish
  • to teach
  • to present everyone fully mature in Christ
  • to work hard with Christ’s energy

After our time looking in the Scriptures, I shared with the group something that has been forming in my mind.  A plan is coming together to do a re-launch of sorts in January, kind of like a Grand Re-Opening.  This is something we’ve talked about doing at the beginning of fall, but this would be on a much larger scale.  We could do a series that’s directly geared toward the unchurched, and we could do some media saturation in an effort to connect with new groups of people.  More on that in the weeks ahead.

To close we discussed a particular need in the community and how we as a church family could help to meet it.

CrossWay On Purpose – Session 4

On Wednesday night, we had 16 people present for the fourth session of CrossWay On Purpose, our church-wide Bible study. We started out with a brief review of last week, then watched a video segment from an Ed Young message.

Ed Young is the pastor of Fellowship Church in Grapevine, Texas. In a series called “The Table,” he talks about how a healthy church should have three groups of people: mature Christians, new Christians, and non-Christians. But unfortunately, as he points out, many churches have a fourth group as well: lazy, overfed Christians who only want to be fed, only focus on their own wants, and never do anything with what they’ve been given. It’s all diet and no exercise.

While the other three groups sit in chairs around the table, this fourth group sits in their high chairs–or as Ed Young puts it, their “I” chairs. They sit in their I chairs, away from the table, and whine and cry and fuss about what they want. “I want to be fed,” “I want more worship,” “I want to go deeper.” Pastor Young points out that many pastors will be tempted to turn their backs on those at the table in order to placate the overfed, whiny, self-absorbed Christians. He warns not to do this, pointing out that these people can either be loved back into following Christ or find another church with an adult nursery (so to speak).

Sound harsh? Not if you’ve seen it happen in a church! It serves as a great reminder of what a healthy church should look like and what it should not look like.

After watching and discussing the video, we jumped into the Bible study. We looked at Romans 12:1-8; 15:1-7; 1 Corinthians 12:12-31; 2 Corinthians 5:17-6:1; Galatians 5:13-15; 6:1-2. Here’s what we found those passages taught us about what God wants His church to be and to do:

  • use our different gifts
  • exercise faith
  • be living sacrifices
  • not conform to the world
  • be transformed by renewing our minds
  • test and approve God’s will
  • not think too highly of ourselves
  • understand that we don’t all have the same gifts and functions
  • we all belong to the same body, though we’re different
  • we (all churches & individual believers) belong to each other
  • put others first
  • consider others
  • form one body in Christ
  • have different gifts
  • we are given our gifts through God’s grace
  • prophesy
  • serve
  • teach
  • encourage
  • give
  • lead
  • show mercy
  • love
  • bear with the failings of the weak
  • build up our neighbors for their good
  • be strong
  • study Scripture
  • have unity
  • have hope
  • have patience
  • endure
  • be encouraged
  • accept what God gives us as our Source
  • glorify God
  • have one mind
  • have one voice
  • follow Jesus in a spirit of unity
  • accept each other
  • bring praise to God
  • we are one body
  • we have many parts
  • we are all in the same Spirit
  • be baptized in the Spirit
  • drink the one Spirit
  • we are different but connected
  • we all belong to the same body
  • each part is needed
  • use our gifts
  • let each part strengthen the whole
  • appreciate one another’s gifts
  • have no division
  • be content with the gifts we’ve been given
  • not be jealous or envious of others’ gifts
  • use our gifts to please God
  • we are a new creation
  • beg (“plead with”) people to receive the grace of God
  • we are reconciled to God through Jesus
  • reconcile others to God (the ministry of reconciliation)
  • be sensitive to the hurts and needs of those estranged from God
  • share the message of reconciliation
  • we are the righteousness of God
  • we are God’s fellow workers
  • see others through the eyes of God
  • we are free
  • serve others in love
  • be selfless
  • love our neighbors as ourselves
  • watch out
  • gently restore those who are caught in sin
  • watch ourselves
  • not be tempted
  • carry each other’s burdens
  • fulfill the law of Christ
  • love

We closed our time together in prayer. Next week we’ll continue with the Bible study, and we’ll set aside part of the time to share about what God’s been saying to us regarding the actual implementation of what we’ve been studying. I look forward to hearing what everyone has to say, and to sharing the vision that’s becoming clearer and clearer in my own heart and mind.

CrossWay On Purpose – Session 3

Last night at CrossWay Church we held the third session of our church-wide Bible study, CrossWay On Purpose. First we had a delicious cookout and played horseshoes, topped off by some delicious and rather creative desserts.

To begin the Bible study, we played darts. Sort of. Everyone got one shot at nailing the bullseye on the dartboard. Everyone managed to hit the dartboard, but only a couple people–both young kids–managed to get close to the bullseye.

We used this experience to talk about how fulfilling the church’s purposes is like taking aim at a target. We have to know exactly where we’re aiming each ministry effort. To further illustrate this concept, we drew a target that Pastor Rick Warren uses at Saddleback Church. In the center–the bullseye–are mature disciples of Jesus Christ who are living for and serving Him. They are the core. The next circle out are the committed, who are developing a daily relationship with Jesus but haven’t necessarily found their ministry niche. Circling them are the congregation–those who consider the church their home and attend regularly. Beyond them are the crowd, who are not church members but have visited. And the widest circle is the community, consisting of those who live within a reasonable driving distance of the church.

Our goal as a church is to connect with people in the community and move them continually toward the center, from the community to the crowd to the congregation to the committed to the core. When they’re at the core, they have embraced Jesus’ purposes for their lives and move back out into the community to serve Him, keeping the cycle going and the church growing. We must be intentional about having strategic steps in place to move people continually closer to the core. With everything we do as a church, we need to know which of these five groups we’re targeting. If we don’t know where we’re aiming, we’ll never hit the target.

When we got into the Scriptures, we spent the evening in the Book of Acts. We examined Acts 1:8; 2:41-47; 4:32-35; 5:42; 6:1-7. In these passages, we discovered that this is what God wants us as a church to be and to do:

· witness

· be Spirit-filled

· receive power

· be Jesus’ witnesses

· be missionaries

· witness to everyone

· witness to those nearby & far away

· accept Jesus’ message

· be aware of and understand one another’s needs

· be non-materialistic

· have good communication

· meet daily

· meet in homes

· be glad

· have sincere hearts

· create an atmosphere for God to bring people together

· go to church—corporate worship services

· be open & accepting

· make the community better

· have the favor of the people

· have singleness of heart

· have a Christlike attitude

· be a growing church

· be united in heart & mind

· share

· put others first

· be selfless

· give to the church, so resources can be distributed

· take care of people’s needs

· give to meet needs

· care for widows

· have structure

· choose the right people for the job

· be a functioning, organized church

· seek the Holy Spirit’s leading

· set aside people to focus on prayer & Bible teaching

· be willing to serve

· distribute responsibility

· embrace our unique gifts

· be in agreement

· pray

· lay hands on each other in prayer

We closed with a time of prayer.

The plan had been for us all to go into Ocean City afterward to watch the fireworks, but unfortunately they were postponed a day because of the wind.  We had 15 people present for the Bible study, including 5 first-timers.

CrossWay On Purpose – Session 2

Last night we held the second session of our church-wide Bible study, CrossWay On Purpose.  Attendance was up, as we had 16 people.  We got through more Bible passages than last week–all the way through the Gospels.

We started out by passing around some cookbooks that I brought from home.  Right away people noticed how new and unused they look!  Usually cookbooks have at least a little bit of splattered butter or flour or some kind of sauce on them.  But nope–not these.

The reason is that I don’t use them.  They’re fun to look through, especially the pictures of really tasty-looking food.  And each recipe tells me exactly what I need to make the dish, and exactly how I can make it, step by step.  I have all that information at my disposal, but I never actually use it–I never put it into practice.  You’re much more likely to find me nuking something in the microwave, tossing a frozen pizza in the oven, or slopping together a sandwich than trying to actually cook something.  I’ve got the cookbooks, but that doesn’t make me a cook.

In the same way, the Bible tells us everything we need to know in order to be the church that God made us to be.  But just knowing these things is not enough.  Just reading what it says won’t make us the church God has in mind any more than knowing a recipe makes me a cook.  As we read all these Bible passages about what to do and what to be as a church, we must look ahead to the end of the study.  When we complete our Bible study, we’ll turn to the practical part of actually doing this stuff.  That’s the part that is the hardest work; it’s also the part that’s the most rewarding.

After this discussion we jumped into these passages: Matthew 22:36-40; 24:14; 25:34-40; 28:18-20; Mark 10:43-45; Luke 4:18-19; 4:43-44; John 4:23; 10:14-18; 13:34-35; 20:21.

Out of these passages, this is what we found God wants His church to be and to do:

·         love God

·         love people

·         love God with all our: heart, mind, soul, strength

·         love with undivided love

·         love yourself

·         get the Word—the Gospel of the Kingdom—out to everyone in the whole world

·         continue spreading the Word

·         we are commissioned

·         testify to what God has done for us personally

·         be witnesses of what we have seen

·         prepare people for the end coming

·         meet people’s needs

·         be aware of people’s needs

·         serve willingly

·         minister without hesitation or holding back

·         feed the hungry

·         clothe the naked

·         visit the sick

·         provide medical care

·         visit the prisoners

·         welcome strangers

·         give water to the thirsty

·         receive our inheritance

·         share our inheritance

·         provide shelter

·         minister to the least of these

·         make disciples

·         go!

·         be fishers of men

·         teach obedience to everything Jesus commands

·         baptize people

·         go with assurance

·         go in the authority & Spirit of Jesus

·         go in Jesus’ name

·         point people to Jesus

·         make disciples of all nations

·         be last

·         serve

·         be servants

·         be first to serve and last to be served

·         be part of a radical counterculture

·         serve & live sacrificially

·         model ourselves after Jesus

·         serve humbly, expecting nothing back

·         be in the world but not of the world

·         pursue God’s standard of greatness

·         preach Good News

·         proclaim freedom

·         preach under God’s anointing

·         be Spirit-filled

·         heal the brokenhearted

·         release & set free

·         be sent by God

·         preach deliverance to the captives

·         give sight to the blind

·         bring hope—spiritually & physically

·         share the Good News of Hope

·         be preachers of the Good News

·         go to the gathering places (like cyberspace)

·         be obedient

·         keep focused

·         keep going & preaching

·         preach in the places of worship (like the Internet & TV)

·         worship God in spirit & truth

·         worship God in the present & future (not to let the past hinder us from worshiping Him)

·         gather sheep

·         shepherd the sheep

·         know the Shepherd

·         recognize the Shepherd’s voice

·         lay down our lives for the sheep

·         put others’ needs above our wants

·         be born again

·         live a resurrected life

·         be united

·         listen for the Shepherd’s voice

·         love each other

·         love each other as Christ loves us

·         build relationships

·         be intentional about loving each other

·         love others in the way they need to be loved

·         love sacrificially

·         be peacemakers

·         be sent by Jesus as He was sent by the Father

·         go into the world as Christ’s ambassadors

·         embody the peace of Christ

·         go in the power & authority of Christ

·         be missionaries where we are

We had some pretty good discussion about what it means to be missional in our context, especially as it relates to helping the poor

One insight that especially stood out to me is that gathering places today are not always actual physical locations.  Jesus hung out at wells–the places where people gathered.  We still have many of those places, like malls, bars, beaches, etc.  But there are also countless millions hanging out in cyberspace.  What a mission field!  What a great way to meet and minister to people!  One of the challenges for today’s church is meeting people where they are by redeeming technology.  We need to be intentional about using the opportunities presented by technology–opportunities to get past people’s defenses and meet them on their own territory, on their own terms… in cyberspace.

It’s been interesting zipping through the Gospels and seeing what Jesus did, that we also should do.  Next week we’ll be getting into Acts and the letters written by the first followers of Jesus, which get into even more detail about what the church should be and do.

Since next Wednesday is July 4th, we’re going to have a cookout here at the church at 5:30.  We’ll do Session 3 of CrossWay On Purpose, then head into Ocean City together to watch the fireworks.  It’ll be awesome!

CrossWay On Purpose – Session 1

On Wednesday, June 20, we held our first session of CrossWay On Purpose.  There were 10 present, and we had a really good study and discussion.

We began with a treasure hunt.  The group was given an envelope with a clue, which led to the location of the next clue.  Each clue was a Bible verse.  For instance, the first clue was: “He came to the sheep pens along the way; a cave was there, and Saul went in to relieve himself” (1 Samuel 24:3).  The group quickly deduced that the next clue was hidden in the mens room–you can guess where.  Our search led us to the guinea pig cage, out to the gate by the playground, to one of the tires on Carolyn’s car, then to the church sign out by the highway, and finally to a large wooden cross in the sanctuary.  At the foot of the cross was a treasure chest containing the folders for CrossWay On Purpose.

Discovering God’s purpose for His church is a lot like that.  He reveals His purposes for His church in His Word–the Bible.  Our job is simply to unearth them, much like going on a treasure hunt.

We also talked about how it’s not our place to come up with our own agenda, our own plans, our own ideas regarding what the church should be about.  It’s not our church!  It’s God’s church–He simply gives us the privilege and the responsibility of being a part of it.  So our goal is not to dredge up our own opinions and plans; our goal is to find out who God wants CrossWay Church to be and what He wants CrossWay Church to do.

Then LJ Timmons, a CrossWay elder, led the Bible study and discussion.  Each participant was given a folder from the treasure chest, which contained a list of Bible passages, a list of questions to study each passage, and room to write down their thoughts about each one.

As the group talked, we wrote down everything these passages said about what what the church is to be and do.  In this first session, we examined Matthew 5:13-16; 9:35; 11:28-30; 16:15-19; 18:19-20.  Here’s our list of what these verses teach us about who we’re to be and what we’re to do:

·         be an example

·         be salt (flavor, preservation)

·         be light

·         be seen, visible

·         make disciples

·         do good deeds

·         good deeds to be seen for God’s glory & praise

·         shine

·         live our lives to be an example—attitude

·         put the Light on a stand—lift up Jesus

·         spread the Word, the Gospel of the Kingdom

·         meet people’s physical needs

·         minister to the whole being

·         continue what Jesus began

·         teach how to love God & love people

·         teach how to be obedient to God

·         teach about a relationship with God

·         go into the towns & villages

·         heal the sick & diseased

·         help people in need

·         have compassion

·         be available

·         provide rest for souls

·         be gentle & humble in heart

·         carry each other’s burdens

·         be a place of rest & refreshment

·         come to Jesus

·         not complicate the Gospel

·         remove/lift burdens rather than add them

·         be meek & lowly in heart—not proud & arrogant

·         show the Way to forgiveness & freedom & rest

·         acknowledge Jesus for who He is

·         experience Jesus with our hearts

·         personally receive God’s revelation & conviction

·         open the gates of Heaven

·         bring people home

·         be “little rocks”

·         stand against the enemy

·         “bind” & “loose”

·         bind sin

·         kick demonic butt

·         come against sin

·         pray

·         be stewards of God’s authority

·         believe what God says

·         come together in Jesus’ name

·         ask & agree in Jesus’ name

·         work well together

·         ask in expectation, believing

·         take God at His Word

·         experience God’s presence together

There was some great discussion about the need for us to really, truly, deeply, personally believe these things for ourselves before we’re able to pass them on to others.  There was also some frustration over the question: “But how do we actually do these things in practical ways in our current setting?”  I love that question and the frustration over it, because I know that at the end of the study it will translate into creative applications.

We closed with a time of group prayer, which included some powerful silence.  I love silence in prayer–it houses some of the holiest moments!

If you weren’t able to attend this first meeting and would like a CrossWay On Purpose study folder, please let me know and I’ll be happy to get one to you.  Meanwhile, we’ll be at it again on Wednesday, June 27.  The session runs from 6:30-8:00 p.m.  And so you can plan ahead–we will be meeting on July 4, which falls on a Wednesday.  What we’ll do is start with a cookout.  Eating begins at 5:30.  We’ll have the Bible study at its regular time and then head into Ocean City for the fireworks.

CrossWay On Purpose

For the next few weeks we’re holding a church-wide Bible study on Wednesday nights.  It’s called CrossWay On Purpose, and its goal is to discover God’s design for CrossWay Church.  Over the next few weeks we’re studying quite a few Bible passages to see what God says about His plan for His church.  We’re focusing on two things: what God wants the church to be, and what God wants the church to do.  We’re compiling a huge list of everything we learn from these Scriptures about the answers to these questions.  At the end of the study, we’ll personalize it by talking about how we can apply everything we’ve discovered.  In other words, how can CrossWay be and do what God wants us to be and do?

Since I know that not everyone who wants to participate can realistically attend each week, I’ll be posting a summary of each session here.  (You’ll be able to find them all by looking in the column at the right and selecting “CrossWay On Purpose” under “Categories.”)  It would be ideal to put this summary on the church website, but since it’s still under construction, I’ll put it on this blog.  Each week I’ll email a link to the new post to everyone on the church email list.  If you don’t receive the email and would like to be added to the list, simply leave a comment below this post or email me (there’s a link to email me at the top right of this page).
