Congratulations Bishop!

Earlier tonight Carolyn and I went over to her parents’ house to have dinner and watch the playoff game between the Washington Redskins and the Seattle Seahawks.  I was especially eager to see Seattle stomp Washington after having to sit through the debacle that was the Redskins-Cowboys game several days ago.

But another reason I really wanted to see the game was to watch Leonard Weaver, the starting fullback for Seattle.  He was a friend of Carolyn’s and mine when we lived in Tennessee and they both went to Carson-Newman.  Leonard, or Bishop as we called him then, is in his third year with Seattle.  They went to the Super Bowl (but lost) his rookie year, but he was sick and left off the postseason roster.  His second year was a wash due to an ankle injury, but he’s had a pretty good season this year.  He got the starting gig when Mack Strong retired, and he’s represented Carson-Newman well!

I hadn’t seen Bishop play since the days when I used to cover the Carson-Newman Eagles for the local paper.  Since this was his first NFL playoff game, I figured it’d be a good time to watch.  It was better than I expected: not only was it really cool watching him play pro ball, but he made a great 17-yard run into the end zone to score his first NFL playoff touchdown and the first touchdown of the game!  (Which the Seahawks won 35-14.)  Here is he dodging a tackle on his way to the end zone:

It was really cool watching Bishop celebrate in the end zone after scoring, knowing that it had to be one of the greatest moments of his life.  Not to sound sappy, but I was so happy for him!  I thought back to times when he led a Bible study at the homeless shelter where I was the night manager, and when he came and spoke to the youth group at the church where I was the youth pastor.  He talked with them about living for God and following the dreams He gives us–and here he is several years later standing in the end zone in the NFL playoffs.  How cool is that?!?

Congratulations Bishop!  And thanks for helping to knock the Skins out of the playoffs!
