Yesterday I went to Crisfield with Daryl to visit his second-grade daughter’s class on a field trip. We were in a park on the water and one of the park employees was talking with the kids about crabs, since they were about to go crabbing. One of the kids asked what they should do if they pulled up a “double” (you know you’re on Maryland’s Eastern Shore when second-graders know that it’s crab mating season). The park person explained that the hard shell crab would be the male, and the soft shell crab would be the female. She said the students could identify the crabs and then put them back in the water.
One little girl raised her hand and asked: “What if they’re a young couple?”
