On Wednesday night we had our first elders meeting at CrossWay since I’ve been the pastor there. We’ve had one active elder and two men who had served as elders but have been inactive for a while. Three of us (Josh, LJ, and me) met for about an hour and a half, and it was so refreshing! We already accomplished three major achievements:
(1) We had our first meeting. The first step is usually the hardest.
(2) We studied the Bible together, looking at what it has to say about elders. We focused on 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9. I love studying the Bible with other people, especially wise and insightful people like LJ and Josh. They really shed a lot of light on the meaning of these passages and how they apply to us today.
(3) We scheduled our next meeting. If the first step is the hardest, the second step is the second hardest. Sometimes the second step is even harder than the first, because it’s often easier to initiate something than it is to sustain it. I’m really looking forward to our discussion, study, prayer time, and fellowship next month!
The importance of eldership in the local church is hard to overstate. I’m so excited about this team working together!
