This past Sunday marked the first Sunday in Advent. Our Advent wreath this year is a little different. Here’s a picture:
We’re using a wreath made of thorns to remind us that the birth of Christ led to His crucifixion. As Simeon told Mary the mother of Jesus: “And a sword will pierce your own soul too” (Luke 2:35). It’s a reminder of the purpose for which He came: to save us from our sins through His death on the cross.
Instead of the traditional large white Christmas candle, we’re using a Mennonite peace lamp. It’s a reminder that Christ is our peace. He brings us peace with God, gives us inner peace, and makes it possible for us to have peace with one another.
